The design model, Understanding by Design (UdB), was chosen because the backward
design offers the most effective way to get students to master targeted goals (Bowen, 2017). This
method will help students build the foundations in mathematics that are so imperative to
establish in first grade as the backward design is focused primarily on student learning and
understanding. When designing lessons and application activities for the math units, the
instructional team or teacher can focus on student learning outcomes with intentionally planned
